This course provides introductory training in food services. A restaurant operated by students under the direction of an experienced chef offers the opportunity to develop the following skills: quantity food preparation, food procurement, storage and inventorying, kitchen planning, cash registering, communications, and employee employer relations. The job titles are: waiter/waitress, cook's helper, fry cook, short order cook, bus person, pantry person, and sandwich person.

ROP STAGECRAFT PRODUCTION

Prerequisites: Two years of fine arts, drama, or related practical art. Age 15 or older

Students will learn theater set design and construction, scenic design and technique, sound and lighting design technology. This is a "hands on" course that will require students to learn specialized vocabulary and reflect on design elements found in school and outside productions. Students will take an active role in the production of numerous performances in the theater. This course will be an introduction to future work in the technical aspects of theater production, sound production, and design.

TRANSITION ACADEMY

Prerequisites: A referral from your 9th grade English teacher, an interview process, and a meeting with parents is required prior to enrollment in this course. See your counselor for details.

This is a program for students of all ability levels who are at risk of academic failure. Students who have a history of attendance problems, failing grades or other academic problems are eligible to apply through their counselor. The courses offer a unique approach to English and Social Studies. Class sizes are smaller and cater to a variety of learning styles. There is regular parent contact and parent participation is required at two meetings throughout the school year. Students sign a contract agreeing to comply with the rules for Transition Academy.

AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is an in school academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility. The AVID program has a demonstrated level of success at high schools across the state. In this course the students work on organizational skills, SAT prep, as well as working in groups with college tutors, and participating in enrichment and motivational activities. This elective class, held during the regular school day, is the foundation of AVID. Students are enrolled in a college preparatory sequence and in this elective section of AVID where they receive academic and motivational support to succeed. Students work in collaborative groups using a curriculum focused on writing and inquiry. Students improve study skills in preparation for college entrance and placement exams, motivational presentations by guest speakers, and attend field trips to colleges and businesses. AVID 10 is for 10th grade students. AVID 11 is for 11th grade students. AVID 12 is for 12th grade students.

Students will be expected to maintain the AV equipment delivery system that services the total school program. Customer service skills and patience are a must! Students will learn to operate each piece of equipment and run a simple maintenance check. There may be some opportunity for media production such as videotaping or recording for classroom use. Students will develop skills used by media specialists. The ability to work independently and reliably is vital to success in this course. Dependable attendance is a requirement for this course. This course will provide technical experience that could be used in a job reference for clerical work in an office or a library.

LIBRARY ASSISTANT

Students will learn to use the library efficiently. Students will review basic reference skills and aid with routine clerical tasks necessary to serve the student body’s needs. Customer service skills and patience are a must! The student will need to focus on tasks with careful attention to details. Alphabetizing, working with decimals, using computers for CD-ROM and on-line searching techniques, and interacting with a library management software program will be included. Dependable attendance is a requirement for this course. This course will provide office-related experience that could be used in a job reference for clerical work or as a page in another library.

PHYSICS READER

Physics readers are expected to work independently and to understand written solutions provided by the instructor. Physics readers MUST have been good physics students (A's or B's) the previous year in order to understand the quizzes, homework, and lab reports that they would be expected to grade.

Students are assigned as teacher aides for faculty or in office assistant positions in school administrative offices. Typical office placements include the attendance, counseling, reception, reprographics, and offices. Service as a TA is a responsible position and students who violate school procedures can, under certain circumstances, be dropped from the class.

Yearbook requires highly motivated, responsible and creative students with a strong desire to write about and/or photograph the Davis High experience. Students publish stories and photographs of school related events within the requirements and standards of yearbook publishing. Students should possess good planning and organizational skills, a positive attitude, and enthusiasm for group cooperation. Good writing and proofreading skills, along with computer and desktop publishing, and photography skills are expected. Some weekend and after school work is required.

SCHOOL SERVICE VOLUNTEER/ COMMUNITY SERVICE VOLUNTEER

This course provides credit for students who volunteer their services within the community or as a high school peer tutor. Students who volunteer at least five hours weekly under supervision are eligible. High school students may work on campus as peer tutors in the Learning Center or in mainstream classes with special education students. Required are weekly time cards and an end-of-semester report submitted to the service coordinator.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Prerequisites: Students must apply for entry to this class. Applications are made available and interviews conducted in April.

This course in practical government enables the student leaders to develop programs and coordinate school events that best promote the interests and welfare of the student body. Students enrolled in the course will be required to attend events outside of class time such as meetings or dances. Students are required to complete a set number of hours of school service and community service. Students are also required to submit typed reports reflecting upon the projects they complete throughout the semester.
