READING FUNDAMENTALS

Prerequisites: Must have RSP teacher approval

This course is driven by student reading needs. The course may include reading decoding skills, fluency exercises and reading comprehension tasks such as tone, main ideas, inferences and vocabulary development.

ALGEBRA FUNDAMENTALS

Prerequisites: Must have RSP teacher approval

This support course focuses on strategies to break down/solve algebraic equations and word problems. A language intensive approach is utilized to help students who are weak in basic math skills. Practical life skills, such as money math, making change, bank accounts, discounts and markups are also addressed. Students must be concurrently enrolled in Algebra I or a Pre-Algebra course.

ENG/READING COMPREHENSION

This course focuses on the underlying skills necessary for comprehension of oral and written language. Both short stories and novels are read with the emphasis on vocabulary development, word relationships, sequencing, main idea, tone, inferences, deductions and understanding characters.

WRITING FUNDAMENTALS

Prerequisites: Must have RSP teacher approval

This is a course designed for RSP students with significant writing delays. This course focuses on a formula based approach to writing mechanics and fundamentals to create structurally sound, vocabulary enriched and grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs. Students are also required to create short stories, book reports, creative writing assignments, life skills writings, journal entries and short essays based on literature and current event reading prompts. Use of technology is also explored including use of computer for prewriting activities as well as word processing.

This course works on individual goals of student I.E.P.s and I.T.P.s. Course curriculum includes standardized test preparation, organizational skills, study skill strategies, career exploration, and post-secondary planning. Students are also offered tutorial assistance with work from other classes.
