Allowing students the opportunity to participate in a School-to-Career program that integrates school-based instruction and work-based activities. The program is grounded upon rigorous and relevant academic standards, career exploration opportunities, integration of student-centered learning, and the fostering of lifelong education and employment. The DSHS program helps students become globally competitive while developing a personal local network among educators, business professionals and community members. Students who complete a pathway will receive an honorary colored cord to wear during graduation ceremonies.

Students who wish to complete a pathway must attend a total of four Pathway Days including one during their senior year and complete the requirements specific to the pathway they select. Pathways Days are "extra." The work missed while students are out of class must be made up. If specific classroom work cannot be made up, students can go to that class on the Pathway Day and then participate in the other two periods. Not all Pathway activities occur during school. A wide variety of extracurricular programs such as job shadows, internships, field trips and competitions may occur outside of school hours.

Students can come for one or all of the periods and one or all of the Pathway Days during their three years at DSHS, depending on their class load and the opportunity they may have to make up missed classroom assignments. During these activities, students have the opportunity to hear guest speakers, and participate in college and career awareness activities in areas of declared interest. Students are required to have completed parent permission forms to attend pathway day activities.
