This course introduces world art history, from prehistoric art through the Renaissance and into modern times, through lecture, films, slides, and independent student research. This course prepares students for the Advanced Placement exam. This class includes 2 trips to San Francisco museums as well as local galleries.

CERAMICS & SCULPTURE P

Students learn different sculptural techniques using clay such as wheel throwing and hand-building to create pottery and three-dimensional pieces. In addition, students explore other types of sculptural media while learning about the artists and various cultures of this great tradition. This course offers the opportunity for students to work three dimensionally with a variety of media. Many types of sculptural problems will be investigated with emphasis on the use of shape and form, unity and texture.

This course develops students drawing and painting skills. Drawing and painting materials including pencil, pen and ink, pastels, tempera acrylic paints, prisma colors, scratch board, and watercolor will be employed in projects. Willingness to experiment with materials and new ideas is encouraged.

FLORAL DESIGN (pending)

This hands on course in floral design teaches the history, theory, techniques and skills currently practiced in floral design. The course contains numerous lab sections on constructing corsage, wreaths, and arrangements used both around home and commercially. Students will be encouraged to display work at local community functions. FFA participation is a graded part of the course.

GRAPHIC ART/DESIGN P

Have fun learning about what makes a good design and what graphic arts is all about. Students create posters, illustrations, advertisements and artwork using traditional materials as well as computer programs. This course gives students an introduction into graphic design and commercial art. The course includes elements of design and their relationships to successful advertising. During the second semester students will explore digital photography while working with Adobe Photoshop.

This black and white film photography class is designed for students to learn how to use and operate a 35mm SLR camera to produce negatives that will be developed and then printed in the darkroom. Students will be given a variety of assignments to help them understand the camera, the enlarger, and principles of composition. The standards will be emphasized such as incorporating the elements and principles of design. Students will be required to take pictures outside of class time for homework. A limited number of cameras are available to check out, but it is recommended that students have their own camera. Written reports may include the history of photography, a famous photographer, and a museum report. Students will finish the course with museum quality, mounted prints.

Teacher must give written approval after reviewing student's portfolio. The Advanced Placement Studio Art Program is intended for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in the study of art. Students should know that AP work involves significantly more time than the typical high school Advanced Art course and that the program requires at least one year of portfolio preparation. Interested students must submit a portfolio of their work in early March for department approval. Subject areas for AP Studio Art are ceramics, drawing, painting, graphic art & design, photography and watercolor.

Learn how to make movies like Hollywood professionals. Video Film introduces students to basic videography, editing, animation, special effects, and classic film review. Students work in small groups to produce short videos for class and public presentation. Essentials include story writing, story boards, camcorder operation, lighting, digital editing, videography technique, 2D & 3D animation, and digital special effects. All students produce a short film for possible entry in the Tower of Youth Showcase teen film competition.

This course gives students a positive learning experience with watercolors. No previous experience is necessary. Students will learn drawing and watercolor techniques that will help them to become successful with watercolors. They will develop a better understanding of color relationships and composition.
